Anxiously Awaiting Your Return, a participatory public altar installation in honor of children, currently and previously incarcerated debuted on September 29, 2018 at The Hour Children Teen Scene Program.
Every night, hundreds of children across the city sleep in beds that are not their own, away from their families in residential facilities. Having worked with incarcerated youth and adults for over 10 years and deeply concerned as undocumented children began being detained in New York City, I envisioned a project that would allow the larger community to carve a space to envision a day when all children return home. Made possible by the 5 Boro Justice Project, Anxiously Awaiting Your Return, is an immersive installation experience that centers a fictional family as they prepare for their oldest child to return home. It is designed to remind us that incarcerated young people are children who deserve infinite chances for success.
